Why doesn't Malaysian football progress? Is it because of the players' attitude (too jaguh kampung)? the people's mindsets (become footballer tak cukup makan lah..)? Or is not enough being done at youth and grassroots levels?
Wherever you stay in Malaysia, I think it's quite evident that A LOT of Malaysians are absolutely crazy about football. It is definitely the number one sport in the country when judged by the number of people who enjoy playing it. Yet, we still lag behind other countries in the international stage.

My English friend finds it amusing that we Malaysians like to simply 'pick a team' from the English Premier League and call it our own. Over there, they generally support teams based on where they come from. If you're born in humble Stockport or Hull for example, you support Stockport FC or Hull City, no matter what division they're in.
My reply to my friend was that I did not find the football being played in local leagues very entertaining. But if I was truly concerned about the state of our local football, maybe it's time I showed more enthusiasm and support for local competitions. If some Englishmen can watch their beloved Hull City being trashed by a Premier League team and still have a good time, maybe I should also try going to Hang Tuah Stadium the next time Melaka plays.
What does everyone else out there think? Is there hope yet for our bola sepak? Can we do our part as Malaysians spoiled by ASTRO's broadcasts of EPL, Serie A and Primera Liga?
