VILLAS-BOAS: AWAY THE LADS
Posted on: Thu 01 Dec 2011Chelsea play a league away game for the first time in a month this weekend and the Newcastle match is one Andre Villas-Boas labels 'an excellent challenge'.
Squad news
Two players are unavailable for the visit to the north-east. Michael Essien continues his long-term rehabilitation from knee surgery and Josh McEachran, who suffered an ankle injury that forced him off during Tuesday's game against Newcastle, is also out. Andre Villas-Boas estimates McEachran will return within the next fortnight.
On facing Newcastle
Villas-Boas predicts that the form Saturday's opponents have shown so far, placing them fourth in the league table, one place and one point ahead of Chelsea, will not desert them as the season progresses.
The Chelsea boss also speaks highly of the work Alan Pardew, who took over the reins at St James' Park 12 months ago, has done so far. 'Saturday is an away game against a team that is surprising everybody and for sure will continue to surprise,' Villas-Boas says. 'Pardew has set an excellent standard and he has brought some stability to Newcastle, in the sense of serenity to a football club that in the last couple of years was a little bit in turmoil. Plus there is a city behind the football club and there is a sense of empathy between the city and the football club. 'Newcastle went on a fantastic run earlier this season and they gained confidence to continue. They will be fully motivated so it is an excellent challenge for us.'
In other news
The recent run of three defeats in four home matches in all competitions has put Chelsea's performances at Stamford Bridge under the microscope. We will be tested on opposition soil this weekend and although the team is currently averaging marginally more league points at home than away from home, Villas-Boas has discussed why at times he sees displays on the road more to his liking.
'In terms of performance, we have had some good matches away from home. In terms of focus and concentration we have been doing well. 'Away from home there is more tension in those games and less relaxation and sometimes extra tension can make you more concentrated and it might help you in your performances. That might be the reason but it might not be that. 'In the games away from home we have shown more quality, more focus, and we were able to perform a bit better. 'Our form against the top teams has not been good enough. From the top teams at the moment we have not yet played three of them so that still might give us a chance. 'December is pure Premier League - three games at home and three games away,' he listed, 'and December can be decisive for any Premier League team. 'It is not at crisis point for us. We just have to pull ourselves together and can only continue with our hard work and believe we are going to reverse the situation.'
